NEWS AND NOTES August 5, 2018

 Today would normally be a Communion Sunday, but with a guest preacher today, and communion next Sunday at Pastor Brege’s farewell, today’s service will follow the Order of Matins (219ff).

 This Thursday (1:30pm) will be Pastor Brege’s last Woodcrest Communion Service.

 We welcome today Rev. Mark Steiner (wife: Deborah) as our guest preacher. Rev. Steiner served years ago as a Field Worker at Bethlehem, Ossian. Rev. Steiner is currently Advancement Officer at the Seminary. We pray the Lord’s blessings on Rev. Mark and Deborah Steiner as they serve the Lord in their respective vocations.

 Note today’s calendar for Pastor Brege’s District obligations in the coming week. He and Lynn will leave for a District/Synod event next Sunday afternoon. Even though next Sunday is Pastor’s farewell Sunday, yet he will be in and out of the church as he continues to transition his books, etc. Pastor also plans to be at our Wyneken 50th Anniversary.

 You are invited to the installation of Rev. Christopher Maronde at St. John, Bingen this afternoon at 2pm. A reception will follow in the Bingen Parish Hall.

 Please mark your calendars now for the following activities: Sunday, September 30, 2018 LWML SRD Workshop 3:00 PM here, St Paul-Preble - Sew Cancer Pads. Sunday, October 7, 2018 LLL/LWML Fall Rally, 3:00 PM at St Peter-Fuelling - Pastor Daniel Dahling will present history on the life of Friedrich Conrad Dietrich Wyneken.  Cheers to 50 Years! Wyneken Family Fun Open House on Sunday, August 26! Kick off with a Tri-church celebration service at St. John, Bingen, starting at 11am. Join us for an open house with kids’ games and lunch at the school following the service. You must RSVP to purchase food tickets. No food tickets will be available the day of the Open House. Do you have any Wyneken School memorabilia? We would love to borrow and display it for the open house. To share your items please contact Abby Wilder at 413-3473.

 This Thursday is Opening Day for K-8th grades at our Wyneken School. After children go to their classrooms we begin with our opening chapel at 8:30am.

 In honor of Pastor Brege's dedication to 36 years at St. Paul Preble Lutheran Church, we would like to gather in his honor to show appreciation for all the years of service. We will be gathering at Wyneken Cafetorium, August 12th at noon. Prior to dining, a few people are invited to speak. Since Pastor Brege has touched so many lives in his 36 years, we are asking for an RSVP to assist in planning for everyone interested in dining. RSVP for food must be received by 8/5/18. RSVP by visiting this site: https://pastorbrege.eventbrite.com or by contacting Nick Hoffman at 260-402-2016.

 Dear Families of St. Paul: Please sign up to make desserts for Pastor Brege’s Farewell Dinner on August 12th at Wyneken Memorial Lutheran School. We would like to have 30 desserts. There is a sign-up sheet in the narthex.

 Our Wyneken parents who attend worship here with their Wyneken children are reminded to initial their column on the special books in the narthex. We have begun another 6 months of record keeping for attendance. Recall that each family with their Wyneken children must attend at least 14 services at the church to retain their member tuition status.

 Sunday School will resume after Labor Day, (Sept. 9) from 9:15-10am. We are in need of teachers for 5-7 grade girls. If you are interested please talk to Tim Hoffman.

 Wyneken is in need of Varsity Volleyball, JV Volleyball and Wrestling coaches for the 2018-19 school year. Contact Greg Louis, Athletic Director at 260-450-2923 or by email at

We will discuss our events and goals for the upcoming year. With Brian taking the position in Petoskey, it is very important that both the youth and their parents participate in this meeting. Anyone else who is 18 years of age or older (and willing to submit to the required background check), is also welcome to volunteer their time in serving our youth. Please consider this opportunity to serve even if you do not have children in grades 6-12.

 You are cordially invited to attend an Evangelism Conference sponsored by the Indiana District’s Council of Congregational Outreach and hosted by Trinity Lutheran Church in Indianapolis, Indiana on September 7 and 8, 2018. The theme of the conference is “Confessing Christ in a Contentious Culture: Speak the Truth in Love (Ephesians 4:15).”

 "Prayer list" for members to use as they bring the needs of others before God's throne of grace: Cathy Terhune has miraculously shown improvement; Marilyn Harvey; Rae Fuhrmann (long time Wyneken teacher).

 Crafty deceitfulness tosses many about concerning life issues (Ephesians 4:14). Christians see more than debates and regulations. At stake are safety and eternity for members of our one body in Christ (4:16). For their sake we speak and show truth in love (4:15) according to our God-given vocations (4:11-12). We take courage that it changes hearts and saves lives even if we suffer for it (4:1). Bread of Life, build us into a body of hope. Amen.

     The lessons for next Sunday are I Kings 19:1-8 ; Eph.4:17-5:2; John 6:35-51.

Sermon: When God's people forget that every good and perfect gift comes from above, they begin to grumble and complain to Moses. God the Father still cares for the bodies and souls of His people with gifts from above. The greatest gift is the Lord Jesus Christ, the Bread from Heaven.
