NEWS AND NOTES, December8th, 2019
At St. Paul, Preble
The Second Sunday of Advent, we meditate upon the Holy Gospel from Matthew 3:1-12, which gives us the ministry of John the Baptist, the last of the Old Testament prophets and the Lord’s forerunner, sent to prepare the way of Jesus. Advent is a season of preparation. Just as we are preparing for the yearly celebration of our Lord’s birth among us at Christmas, as Christians we are also preparing for our Lord’s second Advent in glory, when he comes to judge the living and the dead, and give salvation and eternal life to those who have been waiting for his appearing. For the world, the Last Day will be one of judgment. But for those who are been prepared for his coming, it will be a Day of rejoicing and salvation. So how are we prepared to meet our Lord Jesus? In the same way John’s hearers were prepared for Jesus: by hearing the call to repentance, confessing our sins, and receiving a Baptism which washes, forgives, renews, and sanctifies us in Christ. The entire Christian life is one of repentance: a daily dying to sin and rising to the new, Spirit-filled life of faith toward God, and love toward the neighbor. This is the preparation the Holy Spirit gives through the Word as we await with joy the coming of our Savior.
