NEWS AND NOTES, January 12, 2020

At St. Paul, Preble

The Baptism of our Lord. Epiphany means, ‘appearing,’ ,revealing,’ or ‘manifestation.’ Throughout the season of Epiphany, the glory of the Lord is revealed and made manifest in the person of Jesus Christ. Last week, the glory of the Lord was revealed by way of a star and worshipful Magi, bearing their gifts to the infant Christ.

This week, the glory of the Lord is revealed in the Jordan River, as our Lord is anointed by the Holy Spirit and proclaimed by the heavenly Father to be the Beloved Son. At the Baptism of Jesus, the Holy Trinity in all three persons is made manifest. At our Baptism into Jesus—Christian Baptism—the Trinity is present once again, as the baptizand is marked by the Triune Name. “I baptize you in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”

The Lord’s baptism and ours are two sides of the same coin. Jesus Christ is baptized into our sin and death as the sin-bearer, the Lamb of God, so that we, at our Baptism, might be baptized into his righteousness and life. Dirty sheep enter the water to be cleansed and forgiven. Christ Jesus enters the water to take upon himself the transgressions of the world, that he might put them to death at the cross, and win for the world forgiveness, life, and salvation. Today we give thanks to God for Baptism— that ofJesus, and ours into him.
