Fishers of Men

Fishers of Men

Feb 03, 2019

Passage: Luke 5:1-11

Preacher: Pastor Yeager

Category: Epiphany

Summary:

Fishers of Men

Detail:

Once on Lake Gennesaret, Andrew and Peter, James and John fished all night and caught nothing. At Jesus' word, they reentered the boat and let down their nets again. This time, the nets were so full of fish, their boat started to sink. Jesus said, "From now on, you will catch men." They left everything and followed him. This is the Lord Jesus' establishing his Office of the Holy Ministry. The net is the Church. The fishermen will be the Lord's pastors who bring fish into the net through the preaching of the Gospel. We, the Lord's Christians, are the fish, caught into his glorious kingdom by his Word and Spirit.

The disciples were ordinary men. Nothing about them qualified them for the ministry to which the Lord was calling them. Their sufficiency was not in themselves, but in the Lord Jesus- his presence, word, and gifts would be their sufficiency. We, the fish, have been pulled up out of Baptismal waters into Jesus' kingdom. Like the disciples, nothing we do prepares us to receive Jesus' kingdom. We are drawn into it by grace, and remain in it by abiding in his gracious Word and Sacraments. This Gospel is a picture of the Church.
